In a previous move to make sales persons more accessible to clients, the automobile dealership had shifted its office space from the rear of its large building to the front, into what had once been the showroom. The change would offer employees a view of the lot, more accessibility to customers and essentially make the neatly lined rows of automobiles the new showroom.

In theory, the idea promised to maximize sales and efficiency. In reality, there were glaring problems. While the shift was more convenient, the improved view positioned employees in front of the 16 large westward-facing windows and into the direct path of a brutal afternoon sun. In fact, the glare and heat became such a problem, employees stacked files, boxes and books in front of the windows in an attempt to obstruct the sun and its reflection from the shiny automobiles. Some even wore sunglasses inside to provide relief.

Courtesy Ford was concerned about its professional appearance, its work environment and its ability to maximize sales in an atmosphere that did not afford the comfort and aesthetics to work or meet with customers. Management turned to Perry Glass in Elizabeth City, NC, for a solution.
