July 2, 2009 - It is not every day that your elected officials come to call, let alone send you unsolicited words of encouragement, but not all elected officials are Mike Colona. Mike is a member of the Missouri General Assembly for the 37th district (Halcyon is actually located in a neighboring district). He read about Halcyon in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and sent a very kind letter offering to help the fledgling business make its way through the maze of state programs that can be so helpful to Missouri’ small businesses.
We were stunned. When the Halcyon partners were putting together the acquisition of Halcyon from Solutia, Inc., it had sent out requests for information and assistance all over the state. Some agencies stepped up, especially St. Louis Development Corporation and the Missouri Department of Economic Development . There were, however, a discouraging number of auto-responder e-mails that were more insulting than helpful. And then there is Mike. We did not find him, he found us - and was prepared to help.
In these very troubling economic times, we need our elected officials to lead the charge to help healthy businesses survive unhealthy times times. It is reassuring to know that there leaders like Mike Colona out there who do not wait to be asked for help - he makes house calls.
