Take Control of Your Environment with Halcyon Shades

Unparalleled Heat Control

Picture
Heat enters buildings through the infrared spectrum of sunlight.  Even low emissivity glass allows most rooms exposed to direct sunlight to heat up.  Halcyon Shades reflect infrared light back out the window before it can be absorbed by walls and furnishings and give off heat.  Halcyon Shades, made from metalized film developed for the space program can be retrofit to any building and reduce energy by reducing demand on HVAC systems.

     •  Rejects up to 97% of solar heat gain
     •  Eliminates 99.9% of harmful ultraviolet (UV) light
     •  Eliminates glare by 97%

Halcyon Shades Help Save Energy In Winter Too!

Side Rail Stops Cold Glass From Refrigerating Air
Halcyon Shades offer excellent winter protection from heat loss through windows. First, Halcyon Shades reflect heat in both directions. This means that in winter, heat generated by furnaces that would normally radiate through window glass is reflected back into the building interior and conserved. Second, our optional side rail system prevents cold window glass from refrigerating air that can then circulate into the room causing furnaces work harder. Most forced air heating systems actually blow warm air on glass in an attempt to fight this refrigeration effect.  When used with side rails, Halcyon Shades prevents air from circulating over cold glass while bouncing furnace heat back into the room.   Heat radiating into a room accelerates to the speed of light and can pass through even dual pane window glass.  The only way to trap it in building interiors is by reflection. Halcyon Shades with its optional side rail system, not only reflects the heat, but stops refrigeration exchange simply by lowering the shade.

Watch Halcyon Shades Control Glare

In addition to superb heat control and UV filtering, Halcyon Shades wipe out glare. Superior glare control allows you to see computer monitors,   televisions, projection screens and SmartBoards regardless of the time of day. Click on the video above to watch our motorized shade eliminate glare. Notice the surface of the table and the view outside as the shade lowers.

Glare is caused by light diffusion. In other words, glare is light bouncing off of reflective surfaces in all directions. Dirty windows, for example, cause more glare than clean ones because light bounces off of the dust and grime on the glass. Halcyon Shades will eliminate glare even caused by dirty glass. In fact, Halcyon Shades reduce so much glare that you can actually see the dirt.

Spaceage Technology

Picture
Halcyon Shades are made of a thick, durable metalized polyester film that is often embossed to provide texture and avoid sheen. Originally developed for the space program, its heat reflecting properties are similar to those found in a Thermos™ bottle. This means that Halcyon Shades do not block heat, they literally reflect it. This keeps unwanted heat out in the summer and furnace heat in during the winter. Halcyon Shades are a four season solution to thermal control. With our optional side rail systems, they can even be used to seal up drafty historic windows. All Halcyon Shades are commercial grade regardless of who orders them ... and all Halcyon Shades are made in the USA.

Functional Never Looked So Good

Picture
Unlike cheap tinted shades made out of window tint film, Halcyon Shades are made from laminated MPET film that is 3 to 4 times thicker then tint film. Our most popular styles of shade films are embossed to create a matte finish that eliminates sheen and greatly improves durability. Smooth shade films while offering crystal clear visibility, scratch and show wear over time.  Halcyon Shades manufactures smooth-film shades for a variety of applications including air craft control towers and windows on ships and heavy equipment.  For high-traffic environments or where the sheen of reflective film would not fit the decor of the room, Halcyon Shades' embossed film offers an elegant solution that without compromising energy efficiency, UV protection or glare reduction.

Halcyon Shades uses only the highest quality materials like 6063 aluminum tubes and weight bars, durable polycarbonate clutches and zinc coated bracket systems. Our shades come in surprising variety of styles and colors. Each shade is made by hand and quality inspected individually.

Radiant Barriers For Beginners

Picture
Radiant barriers are made of materials like Halcyon's MPET shade film that reflect the infrared bandwidth of light before it can slow down and turn into heat.  When light moves at the speed of light, all of its energy is used up by its motion.  When light strikes something and is absorbed, it cannot move at the speed of light. The extra energy has to go somewhere, so as it passes through the object that has absorbed it, it gives off heat. This is why a black leather sofa in a sunny window can get so hot that you cannot sit on it. Insulation materials absorb heat, but because they are poor conductors of energy, they slow heat transfer, but they do not eliminate it altogether. Eventually, heat passes through insulation.  Infrared light, however, bounces off of radiant barriers, before it slows never allowing heat to occur in the first place. This is how the famous Thermos™ bottle works. If you fill it with warm liquid, the heat trying to escape the liquid bounces back into the liquid keeping it warm all day. A cold drink stays cold because heat from outside the container is bounced away from the liquid.  For more on radiant barrier technology Click Here.
